SUMMARY:World Migratory Bird Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a morning of reverence for the avian community! \n\n\n\n\nWorld Migratory Bird Day is a celebration of birds and their incredible migration routes that transport them across continents. In the Western hemisphere\, the World Migratory Bird Day is celebrated in Canada and the United States on the 2nd Sunday of May and in Mexico\, South and Central America\, and the Caribbean on the 2nd Sunday of October. This year’s theme: ‘Every bird counts. Your observations matter.’Join us for birdwatching hikes\, family-friendly activities\, and informative discussions at San Damiano Park. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSchedule of Activities: \n\n\n\n8am: Birdwatching hikes led by Mary Murrell and Jeff Galligan \n\n\n\n9am to Noon: Family-friendly activities presented by Aldo Leopold Nature Center and the Monona Public Library. Local authors Alina Loux and Samantha Cora Christian Haas will be onsite to read excerpts from their published children’s books. \n\n\n\n10am: Birds as the Sentinels of Climate Change\, presentation in the Frank Allis House by UW Researcher Ryan Buron \n\n\n\n11am: Birds in the ‘Burbs: Challenges and Opportunities\, presentation in the Frank Allis House by UW Researcher Ryan Buron \n\n\n\nSpend the morning on the shores of Lake Monona at San Damiano Park\, celebrating the amazing migratory routes of birds and revel in the interconnectedness of our world. \n\n\n\nLimited parking onsite. Please carpool\, bus\, bike\, or walk when possible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n9 Ways to Build Bird-Friendly Cities and Communities \n\n\n\nBirds play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by pollinating plants\, controlling pests\, dispersing seeds\, and recycling nutrients. As natural scavengers and ecosystem monitors\, they help maintain biodiversity and signal environmental health. Protecting bird populations ensures the balance\, biodiversity\, and sustainability of ecosystems that all life depends on. \n\n\n\nHere are nine impactful ways to create safer\, bird-friendly cities and communities: \n\n\n\n1. Plant Native Plants \n\n\n\n\nProvide food and shelter for birds while supporting pollinators like bees and butterflies.\n\n\n\nNative plants are adapted to your local ecosystem\, making them sustainable and beneficial for wildlife.\n\n\n\nAttract native bird species and create a healthier environment for all.\n\n\n\n\n2. Combat Collisions \n\n\n\n\nMillions of birds die from window collisions each year.\n\n\n\nPrevent accidents by adding decals\, window films\, or curtains to your windows.\n\n\n\nUpdate existing buildings with bird-friendly materials\, and encourage new construction to use bird-safe glass and designs.\n\n\n\n\n3. Turn Off Lights \n\n\n\n\nArtificial light disrupts bird migration and can be deadly.\n\n\n\nUse shielded\, downward-facing lights\, and turn off unnecessary lights at night.\n\n\n\nInstall timers or motion sensors to reduce light pollution while saving energy.\n\n\n\n\n4. Avoid Pesticides \n\n\n\n\nPesticides harm insects\, contaminate water\, and disrupt ecosystems that birds depend on.\n\n\n\nChoose organic or natural alternatives for your lawn and garden.\n\n\n\nProvide fresh\, clean water for birds to drink\, bathe\, and forage safely.\n\n\n\n\n5. Prevent Plastic Pollution \n\n\n\n\nBirds often ingest or get tangled in plastic\, causing injury or death.\n\n\n\nAvoid single-use plastics\, and properly dispose of items like six-pack rings and fishing lines.\n\n\n\nOrganize or participate in local clean-up efforts to reduce plastic waste in bird habitats.\n\n\n\n\n6. Keep Cats Indoors \n\n\n\n\nDomestic cats are a leading threat to bird populations.\n\n\n\nProtect birds by keeping your cats indoors or building safe outdoor spaces like screened porches or “catios”.\n\n\n\nThese measures also keep your cats healthier and safer.\n\n\n\n\n7. Support Bird-Friendly Coffee \n\n\n\n\nChoose coffee\, grown under native trees using organic\, deforestation-free methods.\n\n\n\nLook for the Bird Friendly seal when purchasing coffee to support sustainable farming and preserve bird habitats.\n\n\n\nBy drinking bird-friendly coffee\, you also fight climate change and help biodiversity thrive.\n\n\n\n\n8. Advocate for Sustainable Urban Planning \n\n\n\n\nSupport policies that create green spaces\, wildlife corridors\, and “wild” areas within city limits.\n\n\n\nEncourage urban planners to prioritize biodiversity and bird habitats.\n\n\n\nPromote sustainable practices that benefit both wildlife and people.\n\n\n\n\n9. Connect\, Educate\, & Inspire \n\n\n\nShare knowledge to help build a stronger connection to nature and foster long-term support for birds. \n\n\n\nCollaborate with neighbors\, schools\, businesses\, and local governments to create bird-friendly spaces. \n\n\n\nHost events like World Migratory Bird Day to raise awareness and inspire conservation efforts.
